Indonesia, Here I Come

I pulled the trigger yesterday and purchased roundtrip airfare to Indonesia and will be spending the month of December there solo. It's all part of my attempt to live as intentionally as I can and to experience life to its fullest.

The inspiration behind Indonesia in December is because something I want to do is to learn to surf and Indonesia has awesome surfing and inexpensive living (though it is costing me $1,700 to get there). The plan is to start in Bali because that's where the best beginner surf is. But I hope to graduate beyond Bali's tourist center of Aussies & Eat, Pray, Love seekers to get up to the island of Sumatra. The swells (already talking like a surfer, dude) are world class there and there's an orangutan sanctuary that sounds pretty cool, as well as some amazing scuba diving and bicycling, though I'm not yet sure if I want to do the scuba diving or not, what with the certification and all.

Fortunately I have a job that allows me to get away with this -- a good company, an understanding boss, and enough ownership of my job responsibilities that I can plan for it and make it happen.

Other things I'd like to experience in a similar way in the coming years include:
  • trekking in the Himalayas
  • bicycle trip across a significant swath of someplace
  • meditative retreat of some sort
  • ski the Haute Route in Switzerland
  • safari in Africa
  • boat trip down the Mississippi
  • Paris deep dive
  • massive river cleanup campaign
Ideally I'd be able to experience these things with a close friend, preferably a girlfriend or wife. But I decided it'd be wise for me not to wait for that to happen so Indonesia, here I come. Hang loose.
